History of the Lenton Parish

The contents of these pages are adapted from a booklet by Leslie Berry entitled "HOLY TRINITY and THE PARISH of LENTON"(1985). Each chapter of the booklet can be reached using the list of contents down the righthand side of this page.
This account attempts to give the brief history of Lenton Parish Church from its dedication in 1842, its connection with the Great Priory of Lenton and the re-building of the former Hospital Chapel of St. Anthony now known as the Priory Church of St. Anthony. Also an account of the changes, alterations and additions to the interior of the Church and the growth of the population in the Parish in the building of the Wollaton Park and Lenton Abbey housing estates and the birth of the daughter Churches, St. Mary and St. Barnabas.

Those who have had association with the Parish Church or its daughter Churches will no doubt be interested in the reference to the Sunday Schools or one of the organisations which were held in one of the Church Halls. Many older Lentonians owe their education to the Lenton Church Schools, while others will have attended the schools on School Street (now Lenton Boulevard) opened in 1874.

The book is written at a time of major reconstruction to the Parish Church - the replacement of many roof timbers which have dry-rot - and the most expensive project ever undertaken. £26,000 is the amount required so far and further inspection has yet to take place which could involve a heavy addition.
