The Vestry

As mentioned elsewhere, the vestry was added to the Church in 1862. Previously the cast end of the chancel was partitioned off from the remainder of the church and used for a vestry. Many couples will remember the vestry in the final stage of their wedding ceremony - the signing of the Register.

Marriage Registers and other Church records are kept in an iron chest which is of considerable antiquity. It is highly decorated and most probably was transferred from the old Church since at one period the Church held records dating back to 1540, but these have now been transferred to the security of the County Records Office, High Pavement, Nottingham. (Records are always available and can be seen on application at the Records Office.)

There are photographs of Vicars of Lenton since its dedication, commencing with the Reverend George Browne M.A. One photograph is missing, that of the Reverend George Hill who followed Canon R.J.R. Skipper who died in 1954 while preaching the sermon at Evensong at Holy Trinity Church, Trinity Square, Nottingham. The Reverend Hill was only in Lenton for a very short spell as he was involved in a fatal accident while cycling to the Nottingham General Hospital on a visit to a parishioner.

Hanging on the wall of the vestry there is a very fine oil painting of the founder of the Church, Francis Wright Esquire, in large gilt frame. There are also some very interesting and now historic photographs of the stone-laying ceremonies on 24th July 1937, of the Churches to be built at Wollaton Park and Lenton Abbey, and the consecration of St. Mary's Church, Wollaton Park, on November 26th 1938 and St. Barnabas, Lenton Abbey, on 25th July 1938.

These were daughter churches to Holy Trinity, Lenton, for many years until declared separate parishes. As the Reverend George Browne became the first vicar of the new Parish church of Lenton, so the Reverend R.J.R. Skipper as vicar of Lenton became also the first vicar of St. Mary's and St. Barnabas Churches in Lenton. The Lord Bishop of Southwell (Dr. Russell Barry) conferred an Honorary Canonry upon the Vicar of Lenton, Reverend R.J.R. Skipper T.D., and the installation took place at Evensong in Southwell Minster on Saturday, February 2nd 1952.
